Graduate Student Appreciation Week
Challenge
Gladstone’s biennial scientific retreat hosts ~400 of Gladstone’s scientists across 2 days at a scenic location in Pacific Grove. The goal was to convey the theme of “Seizing the Momentum” in a way that emphasised the scientific nature of the event, and to generate enthusiasm and excitement within the Gladstone community.
Solution
The solution was to create an animation based on the concept of stochastics, a way of describing momentum at quantum scales. A grid-based background was added as a reference to scientific notebooks, and to create the illusion of forward motion. This concept worked both in motion and as a static graphic across digital and print.
Outcomes
The retreat drew record attendance with over 450 participants—a 13% increase from the previous year. Attendees forged new connections across research disciplines, sparking collaborative opportunities that continue to enrich our scientific work. We also received positive feedback on the design and running of the event.

Digital Applications
The graphic was applied across digital marketing platforms such as the Gladstone website and email campaigns to participants.
Signage
Onsite print applications included directional signage inside and outside of the Gladstone office.
Smaller print applications such as name tags and SWAG items were also created.
